About us

• A division of the Institut für Sozialwissenschaften (Department of Social Sciences) of the Fakultät I: Bildungs-und Sozialwissenschaften (School of Educational and Social Sciences) of the Oldenburg University . The Research Center was established in 1986.

• The Research Center manages the passenger lists and indexes held by the Mediathek (Media Center) ( E-Mail ; Tel.: +49(0)441-798-3194) of the Universitätsbibliothek (University Library). The lists and indexes contain microfilms of the National Archives, Washington D. C.. They preserve the passenger lists (and indexes with reference to these lists) of the vessels arriving at USA-ports (1800/1820-1897) and the quarterly abstracts (reports of the port authorities to the Federal Government in Washington) of Baltimore (1820-1869) and New Orleans (1820-1875).  Additionally,they supply names from passenger lists which have not been preserved. That is, most of the Baltimore passenger lists (1820-1834) are not on the Baltimore passenger lists microfilms, but most of these names are on the quarterly abstracts microfilms. • The minute-book (1853-1905) of St. John at White Creek south of Columbus/Indiana is available at this website.

• Likewise, the Media Center of the Oldenburg University Library holds on microfilm the magazine “Der Deutsche Pionier. Monatsschrift für Erinnerungen aus dem Pionier-Leben in den Vereinigten Staaten”, published by the  „Deutscher Pionierverein von Cincinnati“ (1 (1869)  -  18 (1887). • Publications written in, or animated by, the Research Center are compiled in a bibliography at this website and mostly are available in the Oldenburg University Library, some also at this website.

• The Research Center cooperates with the Max Kade German-American Center of the Indiana University / Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI) in Indianapolis and with the Indiana Historical Society .

• “Routes to the Roots” (Dr. Wolfgang Grams) is an organization developed from the work of the Research Center. This enterprise plans and leads cultural trips to Europe for American tourists and to the USA for German tourists, combined with research services.
